Do newsletters

Just like Blog/News entries, newsletters will be designed as “posts”. The only difference is that they will not be accessible/visible to the public, and if you choose to do so, these posts will also be sent out to your subscriber list.

Create a newsletter draft:

  1. Log into your Wordpress account.
  2. In the Admin Sidebar, click on “Add new Blog/News entry”
  3. A new page opens that says “Create New Post”.
  4. Insert your title.
  5. Click on the black CS logo in the editor to insert the Newsletter template.
  6. Fill in the content.
  7. Scroll down, and under “Categories” check the “Newsletters” ONLY. If you check any other box the post will be public and might not get sent.
  8. Scroll back up and click save when you’re finished with your draft (Wordpress saves drafts automatically, but it doesn’t hurt to do it yourself sometimes). Do NOT press PUBLISH yet.
—> At this point you have a completed draft of your newsletter
Test your drafted newsletter:
  1. To see the newsletter in relation to the CS website, simply click “Preview Post”. But to see what it looks like in your email, follow the steps below.
  2. After saving the draft, look into the address bar of your browser. It should show something like: http://localhost/cswp/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=112&message=4
  3. Remember that post number – it’s your drafts’ “Post ID”. Then click on Settings (Top right corner of the Admin site).
  4. Look for the “Post Notification” menu link and click it.
  5. Under the “Post Notification” heading, click on “Test”.
  6. Enter the post-id from your newsletter draft.
  7. Enter your email address (must be on the subscriber list for it to work).
  8. Select the template with the HTML extension.
  9. Click “Send Test Email”.
  10. You should receive an email shortly, which contains the newsletter draft and will look the way everyone else will see it.
Submit actual newsletter to subscriber list:
  1. Open your newsletter draft (Manage->Posts->Drafts()-> click on title).
  2. Check over your content, check to make sure the Category is set to “Newsletters”.
  3. Under Post Notification, set the drop down box to “Yes” where it asks “Send notification when publishing?”.
  4. Now scroll up and click “Publish”. That should send out the drafted newsletter to all the subscribers.
